In 1540, most of Greece was under the control of the Ottoman Empire, which had gradually conquered the region during the 14th and 15th centuries and governed it through provincial administrations. A few coastal strongholds and islands - most notably Crete and parts of the Ionian Islands - remained under the Republic of Venice, reflecting the continuing Venetian–Ottoman rivalry in the eastern Mediterranean.
