By A.D. 50, the Roman Empire had expanded further north and west, incorporating Britain’s southern regions after the invasion begun under Claudius in A.D. 43 while consolidating control over Gaul, Hispania, the Balkans, Anatolia, Syria, and Egypt. Its main frontiers continued to follow the Rhine and Danube rivers in Europe, the Sahara and Arabian deserts in the south, and the Euphrates River marking the boundary with the Parthian Empire in the east.
