Artist: Paul Delaroche
Year: 1850

This is a reproduction print of the celebrated historical painting “Bonaparte Crossing the Alps” (Bonaparte franchissant les Alpes), created by French painter Paul Delaroche in 1850. The artwork depicts Napoleon Bonaparte crossing the Alps during his military campaign in May 1800, when he led the French Army of the Reserve into northern Italy to confront Austrian forces during the War of the Second Coalition. Unlike the heroic and idealized equestrian portraits of Napoleon, Delaroche presents the future emperor as a determined military commander enduring the difficult conditions of a mountain crossing.

In the spring of 1800, Napoleon, then First Consul of France, organized a daring campaign across the Great St Bernard Pass to surprise the Austrian army operating in northern Italy. French troops transported artillery, supplies and equipment through the challenging Alpine terrain, overcoming snow, steep mountain paths and severe weather. The campaign culminated in the Battle of Marengo on June 14, 1800, where Napoleon's forces defeated the Austrian army and strengthened French control over northern Italy. This victory helped consolidate Napoleon's political authority in France and became one of the defining achievements of his early military career.

Delaroche portrays Napoleon riding a mule through a narrow, snow-covered mountain passage, accompanied by a local guide walking beside the animal. Wrapped in a heavy military cloak, Bonaparte appears thoughtful and physically exhausted, his expression reflecting concentration rather than triumph. The rugged Alpine landscape, cold atmosphere and restrained color palette emphasize the hardship of the journey. Through meticulous realism, dramatic contrasts of light and shadow, and careful attention to historical detail, Delaroche offers a striking alternative to Jacques-Louis David's famous painting “Napoleon Crossing the Alps”, which presents Napoleon on a rearing horse in an idealized pose.

Painted in oil on canvas, the artwork is one of Delaroche's most recognizable historical compositions. Several versions of the subject were produced, including an important example preserved in the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, England. Delaroche, a leading figure of 19th-century French academic painting, was celebrated for his ability to combine historical subjects with psychological depth and realistic human emotion. His interpretation of Napoleon's Alpine crossing emphasizes determination, endurance and military leadership rather than imperial grandeur. Today, “Bonaparte Crossing the Alps” remains an iconic representation of Napoleon Bonaparte, the French Revolutionary Wars and the Italian campaign of 1800.
