Between 945 and 1055, real political power in much of the Middle East was held by the Buyid (Bujid) dynasty, a Shia Iranian military family that controlled Iraq and western Iran while ruling in the name of the weakened Sunni Abbasid caliphs in Baghdad. At the same time, the region was fragmented among several other Islamic states - most notably the Fatimid Caliphate in Egypt and Syria, the Hamdanids in northern Syria and the Jazira, and eastern Iranian dynasties such as the Samanids and later Ghaznavids - until the rise of the Seljuks ended Buyid dominance in 1055.
