This work presents a grand, hand-colored lithographic bird’s-eye view of Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City) as it appeared in 1902 during the height of the French colonial era in Vietnam. The city is depicted from an elevated, oblique perspective looking over the urban landscape and its surroundings, offering a vivid and highly detailed portrayal of Saigon’s urban fabric at the dawn of the 20th century. The composition is dominated by a sweeping view of the city, rendered in vibrant colors with a meticulous attention to architectural and urban detail. The Saigon River curves along the bottom and right edges, with various ships and boats docked along its banks, signifying Saigon’s importance as a port city. The city’s grid-like street plan unfolds from the river inland, punctuated by grand boulevards, tree-lined avenues, and numerous parks and public spaces.
