Artist: Giulio Romano (Giulio Pippi)
Year: c. 1537–1540

This is a reproduction print of the Renaissance historical painting “The Triumph of Titus and Vespasian” (Il trionfo di Tito e Vespasiano), created by Italian artist Giulio Romano, one of Raphael's most important pupils and a leading figure of Italian Mannerism. The artwork depicts the Roman triumph celebrating Emperor Vespasian and his son Titus following the Roman victory in the First Jewish–Roman War, culminating in the capture of Jerusalem in AD 70. Drawing inspiration from classical history, Romano transforms this ancient imperial ceremony into an elaborate celebration of Roman military power and political authority.

The composition portrays Vespasian and Titus participating in a magnificent triumphal procession, accompanied by Roman soldiers, ceremonial attendants and symbols of victory. The historical triumph took place in Rome in AD 71, following the Roman campaign in Judaea and the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. The ceremony celebrated the achievements of the Flavian dynasty, which had emerged victorious from the civil conflicts of AD 69. The procession displayed the spoils of war and reinforced the legitimacy of Vespasian's newly established imperial rule.

Romano's artwork is distinguished by its classical architectural setting, carefully arranged figures, elaborate ceremonial details and dynamic Renaissance composition. The artist draws upon the visual traditions of ancient Roman relief sculpture while incorporating the dramatic gestures, monumental forms and sophisticated spatial arrangements characteristic of 16th-century Italian Mannerism. The triumphal imagery emphasizes the connection between military conquest, imperial prestige and the public ceremonies through which Roman emperors demonstrated their authority.

Created during the Renaissance revival of classical antiquity, the painting reflects the fascination of Italian courts with Roman history, mythology and imperial symbolism. Giulio Romano, celebrated for his decorative programs at the Palazzo Te in Mantua, frequently employed ancient subjects to create visually impressive narratives of power and grandeur. “The Triumph of Titus and Vespasian” remains a compelling representation of the Flavian dynasty, the Roman conquest of Jerusalem and the enduring influence of ancient Rome on Renaissance historical art.
