In 1951, Central Europe east of Germany and Eastern Europe were largely within the sphere of influence of the Soviet Union during the early Cold War. Countries such as Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria were governed by communist regimes aligned with Moscow.
