In 1643, the Free Imperial City of Ulm was a self-governing city-state within the Holy Roman Empire, formally subject only to the emperor but largely autonomous in its internal administration. At the time it was heavily affected by the ongoing Thirty Years' War, with surrounding regions contested by imperial, French, and Swedish forces.
This engraving is a fortification plan and bird’s-eye city view of Ulm, dating to the 17th century, when Ulm was a Free Imperial City of the Holy Roman Empire.
